How to Search Engine image Optimization

The need to optimize images is indicated by all search engines. Why is it important?

First of all, correct image optimization can help you attract additional traffic, for example, from image search.

Secondly, improper optimization can cause incorrect displaying of the site in search and even deterioration of the site ranking.

And now I will point out the main points that are worth paying attention to.

1) Indexing

  • The pages where the images are located should not be disallowed in robots.txt.
  • The pages should be indexed. Sometimes it happens that the pages are open to indexing, but the search engine does not index them. In this case, it is likely that the images on these pages are not indexed.
  • The images themselves should not be closed from indexing to robots.txt or by any other means.

2) Image format

  • Search engines recommend choosing the following formats: GIF, PNG or JPEG.
  • If the image is small or animated, we recommend you to select the GIF format.
  • If it is extremely important for you to transfer images without compression or high quality, you must select PNG. But choosing this format, you should understand that there may be problems with the correct and fast downloading of content. It is necessary to check whether such images are displayed correctly.
  • In other cases you can use the JPG format.
  • Search engines also do not recommend using BMP and TIFF formats.

3) Image dimensions

Image sizes are prescribed in 2 ways:

  • Through the CMS

In any CMS, it is possible to prescribe the width and height of the image in the image editor. You can specify the desired values there.

  • Through the attributes

If for some reason you can not specify the image dimensions via the CMS, you can prescribe them using the width and height attributes.

<imgsrc = "photo1.jpg" width = "800" height = "600">

The optimal image size for your site will be one that allows you to display content to the user and search engines correctly.

You can check if you have any problems with displaying images through a special Google service here.

Also you will be able to detect problems with image optimization, and, as a rule, they concern compression.

For example, you can compress them through our lossy and lossless compression service.

4) Alphabet in the title

  • The name of the image file is recommended to be written only in Latin in order to avoid problems with displaying the file name.
  • If the original file name was in Cyrillic (Russian, Romanian, German, etc.), it must be transliterated according to the rules. To do this you can use the service

5) The name of the file

The image file name can not contain spam or obscure unreadable characters.

- For commercial sites

Example of incorrect name variants:

buy-shoes-converse.jpg - spam version;
shoes4317892.png - a little informative option;
IMG436432.jpg - uninformative option.

Example of correct name variants:

- For information sites

Example of incorrect name variants:

Louvre-Museum-photo-watch.jpg - spamming;
Paris4317892.png - a little informative option;
IMG436432.jpg - uninformative option.

Example of correct name variants:

6) Title

Title is an important attribute when optimizing. In Title, the text that will be displayed when you hover over the image is placed.

- For commercial sites

The correct version might look like this:

title = "converse red sneakers"
title = "sneakers converse All-Star Red 80"
title = "sneakers converse red top view"

Wrong option:

  - Spam:

title = "converse red sneakers buy cheap"
title = "sneakers converse red, blue, yellow, green, photo, price, tip"

- Little information or short Title:

title = "sneakers"
title = "shoes"
title = "photo of shoes"

- Not Informative:

title = "4312125"
title = "buy"

- For information sites

The correct version might look like this:

title = "The Louvre Museum at night"
title = "The Louvre Museum at night from within"
title = "The Louvre Museum in Winter"
title = "Museum of the Louvre in Winter 12.12.2008"

Wrong option:

  - Spam:

title = "Louvre Museum watch photo"

- Little or little information:

title = "France"
title = "museum"

- Not Informative:

title = "4312125"
title = "travel guide"

7) Alt

Alt is an alternative description of your file. When for some reason the image is not shown on the site, the user sees the text placed in the Alt tag. If there is no text, and the tag is missing, the person most likely will not see anything. Sometimes this can be the cause of various problems: search robots index an empty page, users will see the wrong content and much more. Thus, this can negatively affect the ranking of the site in the search engines.

An important question in using alt and title is whether you can make them the same. Yes, you can, especially if you have many similar images. Anyway, this duplication will look better than the total absence of any of the tags.

If you decide not to duplicate, then you can fill alt like this:

alt = "sneakers converse red rice. 1"
alt = "sneakers converse red rice. 2 "
alt = "Louvre Museum at night Figure 1"
alt = "Louvre Museum at night Figure 2"

or so:

alt = "sneakers converse red top view"
alt = "sneakers converse red side view"
alt = "Louvre Museum at night panorama"
alt = "Museum of the Louvre at night from within"

The best option is to make a detailed description:

alt = "Popular model sneakers converse all star red color - top view"
alt = "Popular model sneakers converse all star red - side view"
alt = "Picture of the Louvre Museum in Paris at night with lighting"
alt = "Photo of the Louvre Museum, made in winter in December 2008"

Note: The text in alt can and should contain keywords, but the main thing is that it does not look like spam.

Guided by these principles, you can be sure that your site will meet the requirements of the search engine. The correct combination of all the recommendations will also allow you to get the necessary thematic traffic.

Also recommend that you read the detailed description how reduce picture file size.
